JAMESTOWN, N.D.—Max Busch takes everything that's gone right for the Fargo Shanley boys soccer team the last week as a sign.

Busch scored in the final minutes of regulation and Wasi Odegaard scored the winning goal in a shootout to propel the East Region No. 4-seeded Deacons to a 2-1 win with a 4-3 shootout over West Region No. 1-seeded Bismarck Century on Thursday, Oct. 12, at Rotary Field in the North Dakota state tournament quarterfinals.

"It was basically as close to losing as we could get," Busch said. "There's no reason we can't be in this tournament as a No. 4 seed. It shows we're the dark horse."

The loss for Century (13-4) marks the first No. 1 seed to lose in the state quarterfinals since 2013. The Patriots were the only West Region team to get past the quarterfinals last year also as a No. 1 seed.

Century nearly stole the game back in regulation's final seconds on a game-winning goal, but time ran out just as the shot was going in. Century head coach Ryan Okerson called the Patriots' performance one of their worst of the year after leading for most of the contest.

"We were one second away from (winning). Then in the overtimes, it seemed both teams were playing for a shootout," Okerson said. "I thought it was steadily downhill from the beginning."

Century's Oumar Gueye scored his fourth goal of the season about 22 minutes into the match off an assist from Logan Brown, Century's season assist leader.

Shanley goalkeeper Cam Hoff said he and the team felt a growing sense of panic as the match went on and the Deacons couldn't tie it.

"When we play as a team, we can beat anyone," Hoff said. "You never want to get knocked out. You want to be the winners, so there's always a little bit of panic."

Shanley (9-7-3), a week after tying West Fargo Sheyenne 2-2 in the last regular-season match just to make the state tournament, stayed in the game and finally took advantage with 1:39 to go in regulation. Three-time all-state forward TJ Anderson lofted a free kick over Century defenders and set up Busch for the tying goal.

"We knew the feeling and how to stay composed," Busch said. "You're going to get a little nervous trying to score and take every chance you can get."

After scoreless overtimes, Shanley's Kai Nellermoe, Busch and Anderson scored as did Fabian Lunell, Gueye and Zach Bares for Century to force extra kicks. Odegaard scored for Shanley and Hoff got a winning stop to propel Shanley to the state semifinals.

"You have to stay calm and put the pressure on the shooter," Hoff said. "As a goalie, you're not expected to make the saves, but when you do it's the greatest feeling."
